According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a company named “Libre by Nexus” has allegedly been aiming to profit off of immigrants. The company informed immigrants held in detention centers that they would supply them with bonds allowing for their release as they awaited trial. In order to receive the bond, the immigrants were instructed to purchase a GPS-tracking bracelet. The bracelets costed $420 each month. However, the bracelets allegedly did not in fact have GPS capabilities. New York Attorney General Letitia James has stated, “Libre by Nexus engaged in deceptive practices that targeted our nation’s most vulnerable population, placing profits above the lives of human beings”.
